Painting is the way I share my enthusiasm for living and how I communicate. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember which, places me in the era when the technology available to youngsters interested in art was a box of crayons and a pad of newsprint...quite simple compared to the opportunities young people have today with computers and drawing programs. Though it was low tech, it gave me plenty of opportunity to see if I could get on paper what I was seeing in the world. Trying to interpret what I see, is still what motivates me to keep at it today. Thankfully, I have graduated from using crayons to paint which, to me, makes the process of turning a blank canvas into a painting an almost magical experience. Much of the motivation that inspires me to paint is about problem solving...to see if it is possible to get this gooey, colored paste to look something like the idea that gets stuck in my head.
These days, I try to paint how a scene is impacted by color and light. To my sensibility, it is color and the way light plays on objects that makes a painting interesting. I'm not so interested in minute details...I'm much more interested in the overall scene and how it is lit by the direct or ambient light. If I thought minute details were really important, I would have become a photographer...a camera does a wonderful job of capturing details... way better and much faster than I could ever do with my short attention span.
I have always admired Impressionism. To me, there is a simple truth in using a brush stroke of color instead of minute details to make a point. I love the effect that a well placed swipe of color can have in a painting but, I find lots of brush work to be tedious and visually monotonous. Making an impression of what I see is how I paint and it is this style of painting by others which attracts my attention to their work.
